While there are not a huge number of mammals species on the San Juan Islands we do have our share. One can’t help notice the hundreds of black-tail deer that frequent the roadsides while we travel the roads. In the waters surrounding the islands we have the river otter and mink. Skunks, siver fox, squirrels, raccoons and rabbits may also be seen. Bears, cougars and wolves likely lived on these islands in the past but unfortunately (fortunately?) have long since been forced out by human development.
