San Juan Island Parks

American Camp National Historical Park - This is a great whale watching location and the site of the "almost war" between Britain and the USA (see History). American Camp occupies most of San Juan's southern tail, and includes an information centrer, interpretive trails, two restored military buildings and some public beach.

British Camp & Garrison Bay

British Camp overlooks Garrison Bay on the northeast corner and contains a few whitewashed buildings, neat lawns, and a blockhouse.

San Juan County Park  features 19 sites in a very pretty cove and fortunate indeed are those campers who get here early enough to snag a spot. This is a popular day use area for the locals, who meet for ball games, barbecues and outings. A small lookout on the cliff provides shelter for picnickers when the wind comes off the sea or the rare rain makes an appearance.

Lime Kiln State Park, 32 acres on the west side, is another good place to whale watch while you are picnicking.  It's a day use area only.

Griffin Bay Park - Next to American Camp, this small park has pit toilets, two mooring buoys, four campsites and a picnic area
