Orcas Hotel (1904)

 You may think that this island is named after the whale, but guess again - who else but those well traveled Spanish Explorers of the 18th century!

Superlatives come to mind when describing Orcas. The largest of the chain (at 58 sq. miles or 147.4 sq. km), the hilliest, (Mt. Constitution rises 2,409 ft.) and many say the most beautiful.
This "saddlebag shaped" island is almost cut in half by Eastsound. Lush and steep, the island is primarily rural, forested with second-growth fir and alder. Mt. Constitution is part of the extensive Moran State Park. and visitors can experience a 360 degree view from a viewing platform here if they have the courage to drive the narrow, winding mountain road to the top.

Orcas features resorts that range from funky fun to fine, five star; from new to historic; from tiny to expansive.

Bustling communities can be found at Deer Harbor, at East sound, Olga, and at the ferry landing at Orcas, where a historic hotel is located.

The population of Orcas is about 4,400 residents.
