Lucky Captain John Shaw, to have such a beautiful little island named
after him! The honor was bestowed on him in 1841, by the Wilkes Expedition sixteen
years after Shaw, a Navy Captain, had distinguished himself in the war against Algiers.
The first visitors, however, came much earlier. Shaw was popular with Native
Americans, who came to gather the bountiful harvests of shellfish and called the island, "Somemana".

By the eighteen century, over seven hundred were living in this piece of paradise,
half in Blind Bay and half in the south end near today's

By the nineteen century, the settlers had arrived, and many of the original
inhabitants had departed. Some, however, inter-married and established
homesteads. One of them, naturally a beautiful young Indian princess,
is reputed to still haunt the area, albeit in a friendly way.
